Situated at the intersection of gender, culture, and history, CGU’s MA in Applied Gender Studies explores today’s pertinent women’s and gender issues through creative, ands-on practice in order to advance modern society. Applied Gender Studies graduate pursue leadership roles shaping policy and creating positive, lasting impact, domestically and globally. Flexibility is built into the program, offering numerous ways to customize a specialized course of study.
At the heart of the Applied Gender Studies program is an internship that allows you to positively impact your community even before graduation, with real-world experience at organizations supporting and empowering women across the globe. The internship takes you out of the classroom and into the world to solve problems in critical setting like schools, community organizations, women’s centers, prisons and shelters.
Students admitted to the program in Applied Gender Studies should refer to the SAH Humanities Handbook for the year in which they begin the program for complete details.
Degree Requirements
A total of 36 units are required for the degree.
Required Courses (16 units)
- AGS 300 - Applied Feminist Applications (4 units)
- AGS 396 - Internship (4 units)
- Local, domestic, and international opportunities in the student’s area of interest are available for completion of a required internship. For internships outside the southern California area, competitive funds are available to assist as needed.
- One course (4 units) in feminist theory selected from:

Electives (16 units)
Twelve units must be be within an area of emphasis such as politics, humanities, cultural studies, education, community and global health, management, or any field of study at the university to develop expertise in an area of interest, such as educational or public policy, environmental issues, women’s leadership, global women’s issues, etc.

School of Arts and Humanities Practical Experience Milestone
Students in all departments of the School of Arts and Humanities must meet the Practical Experience Milestone through one of the following: - A Teaching Assistantship
- A Research Assistantship
- An external teaching opportunity, in one or more semesters student is enrolled
- A research project with CGU or Consortium Faculty (5C’s, KGI)
- One or more articles prepared or prepared and submitted for publication, single or co authored
- One or more academic book reviews prepared or prepared and submitted for publication
- One or more exhibition proposals, prepared or prepared and implemented
- A music recital
- Completion of one or more semesters in Doctoral Studies that includes relevant work experience and/or progress on the doctoral dissertation
- Preparing and submitting the MA thesis
- Attending an Academic Conference (either to give a paper or as an attendee)
- Doing an Internship (paid or unpaid, for credit or not for credit)
- Additional employment or project that the department considers as providing appropriate professional training, particularly for students not considering the academic teaching track
Students must have their milestone approved by the department prior to the submission of their completed Final Approval Form. This milestone is to be completed during the time to degree at CGU (7 years for doctoral students, 5 years for masters students). Extensions of Time to Degree citing the milestone will not be approved. Students may have a maximum of 4 years of experience for the Practical Experience Milestone. |
