The Certificate in Africana Studies is a joint program of the Intercollegiate Department of Black Studies (IDBS) of The Claremont Colleges and Claremont Graduate University. The program is open to CGU students who are already enrolled in a Master’s or doctoral program and courses taken for the certificate may be applied toward the student’s degree program requirements.
Program Requirements
Coursework. The certificate requires a minimum of 20 units, or five courses, as indicated below.
- AFR 338 - African Concepts and Methods of Africana Studies is required.
- Three of the courses must be taken at CGU.
- Courses, which require coherence and the demonstration of substantive breadth relevant to Africana Studies, must be approved by the Director of the Graduate Certificate Program.
Minimum GPA. The University’s policy on satisfactory academic progress applies. A minimum grade point average of 3.0 is required in all courses taken for the certificate.
