Music programs at CGU combine comprehensive instruction and training in music history and theory (musicology), historical performance practices, and performance. The department is particularly strong in the area of keyboard performance practices, possessing numerous period-style instruments (harpsichords, as well as a fortepiano and clavichord) and modern pianos. Students also have access to the world-famous Glatter Götz/Rosales organ nearby for regular practice and performances. The keyboard faculty are exceptionally well-qualified. CGU also owns a number of period-style string and wind instruments and is home to the prestigious journal, Performance Practice Review.
The flexible curriculum includes academic courses in musicology (history and theory, all periods) as well as studio courses in voice, conducting, and on most modern and historically-based instruments. Musicology majors are permitted to supplement their academic study with studio training. All doctoral students enroll in at least one transdisciplinary course, with many options from which to choose. The “boutique” setting of the department fosters close interaction among students and faculty
