CGH 410 - Foundations of Global Health: An Interdisciplinary Approach (Doctoral)

This course takes a transdisciplinary approach to understanding key public health challenges that often transcend national boundaries and require collaborative global solutions. Threats to health security and wellbeing of communities in the United States and abroad are extensive and include natural and man-made disasters, environmental degradation, health inequities, emerging and re-emerging diseases, and a growing epidemic of non-communicable diseases. Topics that impact health outcomes, including globalization, over- and undernutrition, complex humanitarian emergencies, access and utilization to health and mental health services, reproductive health practices and policies, maternal and child health practices, and cultural influences are addressed from a multi-sectoral perspective. Innovative solutions to public health problems, including planetary health considerations, use of technology, public-private collaborations, and community and grassroots activities will be highlighted. The course utilizes interactive, participatory learning methods, including cases studies, group discussions and activities that provide students with opportunities to develop problem-solving strategies for public health application.
