MUSIC 304 - Hist of Performance Practices “Performance practice” (from the German, Aufführungspraxis) is essentially the study of the information necessary in order to authentically perform musical compositions. It is a massive field in which the CGU Music Dept. offers master’s and doctoral degrees. (The department also sponsors a prestigious, online journal, Performance Practice Review, edited by Prof. Zappulla.) In this course, students will engage in regular reading and musico-analytical assignments in which the performance practices of music from the seventeenth through the nineteenth centuries will be the foci. Conversance in the field of historical performance practices is essential to success with respect to the department’s qualifying exams as well as professional careers in music. This course is mandatory for students enrolled in CGU’s HPP programs. Units: 4 Course Type: Seminar
