CLST 477 - Film Theory and Criticism

The first examples of film theory and criticism date back to the first cinematic texts produced, and this course will begin by looking at work that theorized the style and significance of early cinema. We will then cover the major areas within film theory, including questions of the gendered gaze, authorship, genre, spectatorship, and digital media. Theoretical texts will be accompanied by selected film texts from a variety of historical periods and genres with a focus on how to write about the cinema from a theoretical and analytical perspective. accompanied by selected film texts from a variety of historical periods and genres with a focus on how to write about the cinema from a theoretical and analytical perspective. This course satisfies either a Cultural Studies Methods Course or a Media Studies Concentration requirement (but cannot be counted for both.)
