AFR 362 - Black Diaspora This course examines black diasporic cultural production and socio-political theory from the nineteenth century to the present in the Caribbean, Latin America and the United States, with a brief nod to British Cultural Studies. The course will deploy theories of diaspora and blackness, examinations of the specific gendering of black bodies, and paradigms for the comparative and transnational study of Afro-diasporic groups in analyses of a wide range of social movements and signifying practices, including ethnography, historiography, the Internet, film, journalism, literature, martial arts, music, and the visual arts. Theorists may include Collins, Crenshaw, Du Bois, Fanon, Gilroy, Glissant, Guillén, Moten, and Spillers. Writing assignments will include a prospectus (3-5 pages) and a final paper (15-18 pages).
