IST 602 - Introduction to Use-Inspired Research

Use-inspired basic research consists of scientific investigation whose rationale, conceptualization, and research directions are driven by the potential use to which the knowledge will be applied. As such, research conducted in Pasteur’s quadrant can directly foster technological development and innovation and can also create clear strategies to solve practical problems. Accordingly, in this course, we will utilize a framework to: (1) identify the issues important to the sector or decision domain, (2) characterize the types of information that would help inform decisions in the sector or domain, (3) determine whether existing information is adequate, (4) identify research needed to produce information that is not yet available, and (5) identify barriers to the awareness, use, and integration of knowledge by decision makers and to identify barriers to the production of the needed information by the researcher. As such, the goal of this course is to create researcher-practitioners, researchers who are dedicated to generating new knowledge that is useful to practitioners.
