2025-2026 Bulletin: Program Requirements

Requirements

The American studies program is premised on the principle that “America” is too complex and capacious to be limited to a single discipline. The American studies field at Claremont Graduate University encourages students to draw on a wide variety of disciplinary traditions and source material to explore the contested meaning of the term “America.” While dealing substantially with the United States, coursework in the American studies program may also embrace the Americas more broadly. It will emphasize relationships between politics, economics, literature, art, religion, and identity, among other topics. The American studies program offers students flexible and wide-ranging training in a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives, and equips them for careers in academia, education, public service, law, and media.

Requirements:

  • Four seminars; at least two must be outside of the CLST course offerings
