The Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS) Certificate Program is designed to engage students in an interdisciplinary field of study which analyzes the phenomenon of gender through a lens of intersectionality, including race, class, sexuality, and location. The focus on interdisciplinary studies also allows students to study the significance of gender theory, research, and practice, while understanding “gender” as a social construction referring to femininities and masculinities.
Admission Requirements
The program is available to students already enrolled in a CGU degree program. Individuals who have completed a bachelor’s degree may apply to CGU as a certificate status student to participate in the program. The application process for non-CGU is available on the Admissions website, www.cgu.edu/admission. Certificate status students who wish to continue on into a CGU degree program must submit a complete application to the University. Admission to a certificate program does not guarantee admission to any CGU degree program.
Program Requirements
Coursework. Completion of WGS 301 (Introduction to Women’s and Gender Studies) and three elective courses relevant to Women’s and Gender Studies are required. Electives may be selected from the CGU Schedule of Classes or from the curricular offerings of the Intercollegiate Department of Women’s Studies of The Claremont Colleges with the prior approval of the program director and the student’s faculty advisor.
University Policies. University policies detailed in the Academic Policies section of the Bulletin apply.
