Students admitted to the doctoral program in English are required to become familiar with the program’s Student Handbook for the year in which the student begins the program.
Admissions Requirements
A Master’s degree is required for admission to the program.
Degree Requirements
Coursework. 72 units of coursework are required.
Research Tools. Two foreign languages/research tools must be completed.
Qualifying Exams and Dissertation. Refer to procedures and guidelines in the Registration and Degree Information section of the Bulletin.

Concentrations
The transdisciplinary approach of the English concentrations is based upon an intellectually unified program of study that includes seminars offered by other disciplines at CGU and The Claremont Colleges. A minimum of four seminars should be taken in English. In addition, a minimum of two courses should be taken in other disciplines. American Studies Program
Potential course topics and areas for the American Studies concentration include the following.
- Puritanism and American Literature and Culture
- 19th-Century American Literature and Culture
- Representations of the Frontier in American Literature and Culture
- Jazz Aesthetic in American Literature and Culture
- Harlem Renaissance
- American Migrations
- American Women Writers and Feminism
- Multi-culturalism and American Literature
- American Popular Culture
- American Literature and Film
- Autobiography and American Literature and Culture
Students interested in this concentration may wish to consult with Dr. Wendy Martin. Early Modern Studies Program
The Early Modern Studies concentration encompasses the disciplines of English, history, and philosophy. The concentration prepares students for teaching in higher education in one of these disciplines. Coursework for the concentration should meet the following requirements.
- Five courses in the early modern period (1509-1714), two of which must be outside the discipline in which the student is earning the degree
- Courses in Latin Reading and Paleography
- One course based upon bibliographic inquiry into the exclusive collections of modern print and manuscripts housed in the Special Collections of The Claremont Colleges Library
