Degree Requirements

Admission to the Ph.D. program is restricted to students who have graduated with distinction from our Philosophy, MA  program and who wish to work in the history of philosophy. The degree requires the completion of 72 units of coursework (including the 4-unit Transdisciplinary Course Requirement ), a folio, two foreign languages/research tools, a preliminary oral examination on the dissertation prospectus, a dissertation, and a final oral examination.


Students admitted to any degree program in the Philosophy Department must read carefully the Philosophy Department Student Handbook published during the year they begin the program and the Registration and Degree Information  section of this Bulletin for a complete, detailed listing of requirements.
