Cultural Studies, PhD

Degree Requirements

Students accepted into the PhD program in cultural studies are required to complete 72 units of coursework (including the 4-unit Transdisciplinary Course Requirement  ), two research tools (PhD students have the option to either take two approved Research Method classes or to take one Research Method class and pass a language translation exam), three 300-level introductory courses in Cultural Studies), qualifying exams, and a dissertation. In order to be allowed to take the PhD Qualifying Exams, students must have a GPA of at least 3.3 (B+) in their coursework with no grade lower than a B-.


Students admitted to any degree program in the Cultural Studies Department must read carefully the Cultural Studies Department Student Handbook published during the year in which they began the program and the Registration and Degree Information  section in this Bulletin for a complete, detailed listing of requirements.
