Health Information Systems and Technology, MS

The Center for Information Systems and Technology (CISAT) along with the School of Community and Global Health (SCGH) of Claremont Graduate University offer a joint degree program in Health Information Systems & Technology. The program provides students with the tools and skills needed to develop, manage, and support health information technology systems, and to work in a variety of health IT positions. The program will emphasize the following key skills: data analysis, data mining, software development, communications and project management.

Degree Requirements

Coursework. The 40-unit program includes core public health and information technology courses (20 units) and electives in both schools (20 units).

SCGH Core Courses (12 units)

Students complete three courses from the following:

  • CGH 301, Biostatistics or CGH 401a, Advanced Statistical Methods
  • CGH 302, Epidemiology
  • CGH 303, Health Services in the US and Abroad

CISAT Core Courses (8 units)

Students select two courses from the following:

  • IST 302, Databases
  • IST 303, Software Development
  • IST 304, Communications and Networking
  • IST 305, Management of IS&T
  • IST 341, CS Insights on Python Programming
  • IST 370, Geographic Information Systems: Essential Concepts
  • IST 380, Introduction to Health Informatics

SCGH Elective Course (8 units)

Students select two courses from the following recommendations:

  • CGH 300, Theoretical Foundations in Health Promotion and Education
  • CGH 305, Grant Writing and Proposal Development
  • CGH 312, Data Analysis (SAS)
  • CGH 313, Research Methods or CGH 402, Advanced Research Methods
  • CGH 308, Foundations of Program Planning
  • CGH 411, Health Care Economics & Financing

CISAT Elective Courses to constitute an area of emphasis (12 units)

Students may pursue the following areas of emphasis within CISAT: IST Management, Mobile App Development, Geographic Information Systems, Health Informatics, Cybersecurity and Networking, or design a customized option in collaboration with an advisor. Recommended courses within each area of emphasis are listed below.

Information Systems Technology Management

Students select one from the following:

  • IST 330, Supervised Professional Practice in IST
  • IST 323, IT Strategy & Innovation Practicum

Students select two from the following:  

  • IST 320, Design Methods and Tools
  • IST 321, Leading Digital Business Transformation
  • IST 322, Technological Innovation & Entrepreneurship
  • IST 324, Digital Product Management
  • IST 327, Design Thinking and Creative Problem Solving

Mobile Application Development

Students take the following:

  • IST 311, Mobile Application Development
  • IST 330, Supervised Professional Practice in IST

Students select one course of interest

Geographic Information Systems

Students take the following:

  • IST 372, Advanced GIS Analytics & Solution Development
  • IST 373, GIS Practicum

Students select one course from the following 377-sequence:

  • IST 377 (A-G), GIS Special Topics

Health Informatics

Students take all of the following:

  • IST 381, Persuasive Technologies
  • IST 383, Health Informatics Practicum
  • IST 385, Telehealth

Cybersecurity and Networking

Students take the following:

  • IST 353, Cybersecurity Practicum

Students select two of the following:

  • IST 328, Blockchain Technologies: A Hands-On Approach and
  • IST 329, Blockchain: Smart Contracts
  • IST 350, Cryptography & Computer Security
  • IST 351, Cybersecurity Risk Management
  • IST 360, Internet of Things: Introduction
  • IST 361, Internet of Things: Specialization

Transfer Credit. The University’s policy on transfer credit applies. The MS program permits the transfer of up to 10 semester units from prior graduate work completed outside of CGU with advisor approval.
