Financial Engineering, MS / Mathematics, MS

Offered jointly by the faculty of Management and Mathematics, this dual degree was created for individuals seeking to expand their knowledge and expertise in the fields of both financial engineering and mathematics. Students earn two Master’s degrees: the Master of Science in Financial Engineering  and the Master of Science in Mathematics . With the two degrees, graduates increase their marketability and gain a distinct competitive advantage in the professional marketplace.

Single degree students in either program may petition to the academic directors to enter the dual degree prior to their final semester at CGU. 

Degree Requirements

Coursework.  The dual degree requires completion of 60 units of advisor-approved coursework. Students may wish to familiarize themselves with the individual degree requirements for both the Financial Engineering, MS  and MS in Mathematics . Students work to complete requirements for the two degrees simultaneously and may benefit from the full scope of both programs.

Required courses:

  • 14 units Management core
    • Corporate Finance
    • Financial Derivatives
    • Financial Engineering Practicum
    • Introduction to Risk Management
  • 14 units Mathematics core
    • Methods of applied probabiliy and statistics or Financial Time Series or Statistics
    • Stochastic Processes
    • Mathematical Finance
    • Quantitative Risk Management
  • 12 units advisor-approved Financial Engineering electives chosen from the offerings of both Management and Mathematics programs
  • 20 units advisor-approved additional Mathematics electives

At least 20 units of all Mathematics coursework taken towards the dual degree must be gamma courses (normally Math 300-level or higher). A grade of B- or above must be earned in gamma courses.
