Information Systems & Technology - MSIST

The Master of Science in Information Systems & Technology (MSIST) offers a distinct blend of practical application and theoretical focus. The curriculum has been designed to provide technical and managerial knowledge, valuable for students intending to go into practice or to transition into a doctoral program.  The program’s design welcomes students with or without a background in information technology.

Degree Requirements

Coursework.  A total of 36 units (32 units for working professonals, upon faculty approval) are required.

Transfer Credit.  The University’s policy on transfer credit  applies. For the MSIST, up to 8 units of previous graduate coursework may be transferred.

Two Competency Courses - Does not count towards units for degree


One (1) Transdisciplinary Course and (1) Practicum:


Transdisciplinary Course
Practicum (can be waived with permission for working professionals)

Three Specialization Courses- 12 units


Five specialization areas are offered.

  • Data Science and Data Analytics
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Cybersecurity and Networking
  • Health Informatics
  • IT Strategy and Innovation

Students take three courses in one of these areas or work with a faculty member to design a customized track.  This flexibility allows students to develop expertise in one or more sub-fields as desired.  Additional information is available on the department website.
