Religion, PhD


The doctoral program in Religion requires a general knowledge of religion, achieved from an undergraduate program in religion, a Master’s program in religion, or a degree from a school of theology.

Students admitted to the doctoral program in Religion must become familiar with the program’s Student Handbook for the year in which the student begins the program.

Degree Requirements

Coursework.  A minimum of 72 units are required, including RELIGION 362 (Theories of Religion).  Coursework should be drawn from 400-level course offerings, although a number of 300-level courses may be accepted.  Students are urged to consult with their advisors. 

Concentrations.  Areas for concentration include the following.

  • Critical Comparative Scriptures
  • History of Christianity and Religions of North America
  • Philosophy of Religion and Theology
  • Women’s Studies in Religion

Note that areas of concentrations may entail additional requirements, such as language competencies, program prerequisites, and major papers.  Refer to the program’s Student Handbook for specific information.

Research Tool - Language.  Reading knowledge in at least one foreign language, either German or French.  Other languages may be necessary depending upon the field of specialization.  A language exam must be completed within the student’s first 24 units of coursework.

Second Research Tool.  A second research tool must be completed, from which the student has a number of options

  • Second foreign language
  • Research methodology, such as ethnography
  • Quantitative methods

Qualifying Exams.  Upon completion of coursework, students take their qualifying exams.  Policies and procedures are detailed in the Registration section of the Bulletin.

Dissertation.  Policies and procedures are detailed in the Registration and Degree Information  section of the Bulletin.

Transfer Credit.  A maximum of 24 units may be transferred.  Policies and procedures are detailed in the Registration and Degree Information  section of the Bulletin.
