Students admitted to the Master of Arts in English program are required to become familiar with the program’s Student Handbook for the year in which the student begins the program.

Admissions Requirements

A bachelor’s degree is required for admission to the program.

Degree Requirements

Coursework. 40 units of coursework are required.

Concentrations.  In consultation with an advisor, students may tailor a concentration for English study.  A number of concentrations gave already been identified, with information available in the program’s Student Handbook.  Information about the concentration in Early Modern Studies is provided below.

Research Tool.  One foreign language/research tool must be completed.

Concentration in Early Modern Studies


Early Modern Studies is a transdisciplinary concentration encompassing the disciplines of English, history, and philosophy.  For doctoral students, the concentration prepares students for teaching career in higher education.  For Master’s students, the discrete course of study complements coursework in archival and museum studies.

Coursework.  Coursework requirements are as follows.

  • Five courses in the early modern period (1509-1714), of which two courses must be in a discipline other than the one in which the student is receiving the degree
  • Course in Latin Reading
  • Course in Paleography
  • One course based upon bibliographic inquiry into the extensive collections of modern print and manuscripts housed in the Special Collections of the The Claremont Colleges Library
