Academic Program

The Teacher Education Internship Program offers coursework leading to the multiple subject, single subject, and education specialist credentials. Because the program is both a master’s and a credentialing program, the CGU institutional degree requirements and the California State credentialing requirements must be met.

The CGU Teacher Education Internship Program combines opportunities for full-time employment in urban schools with the opportunity to earn both a teaching credential and MA in four semesters. After successful completion of an initial summer (or spring and summer) term, students are eligible for an internship credential.

The four steps to completing the standard credential program include:

(1) First summer (or spring and first summer) during which the student enrolls in 12 units of coursework and is placed with a master teacher in a nearby school district for field experience.
(2) Fall semester involves 6 units of coursework taken in ten full-day Saturday sessions.  Candidates must teach full-time on an internship or residency basis under the mentorship of a faculty advisor.
(3) Spring semester requires 6 units of coursework in ten full-day Saturday sessions while continuing internship or residency teaching.  Faculty advisors continue to mentor the intern.
(4) Second summer involves 12 units of post-internship graduate study, including eight units of elective courses that allow students to explore interests in educational philosophy, theory, curriculum, administration, and/or policy.

A complete listing of Teacher Education Internship Program courses, along with full course descriptions, can be found under the “Credentials Offered” sub-heading at www.cgu.edu/pages/4609.asp.
