Academic Program

The Master of Arts in Education is an individually designed program with concentrations of study in the following areas:

  • Teaching, Learning, and Culture
  • Educational Policy, Evaluation, and Reform
  • Higher Education/Student Affairs
  • Special Education

Degree Requirements

The master’s degree requires 32 semester units of coursework (a maximum of 6 semester units can be transferred, with advisor permission, from prior graduate work taken within the last five years). The program follows general institutional rules for the degree. After obtaining the approval of their advisor, candidates choose to write a thesis or critique.  The thesis requires two faculty readers and formal submission to the Office of Admissions and Records while the critique requires only one faculty reader and submission of the final draft to the SES Office. See the Education MA Handbook (on-line at www.cgu.edu/pages/347.asp) for more related information.  To learn more about the above concentrations, got to http://www.cgu.edu/pages/1638.asp.

Master’s Degree Along the Way to the PhD

Upon completion of 32 units of study (including up to six semester units transferred from other graduate work completed in the last five years) and one approved qualifying exam (in lieu of the thesis or critique), SES students taking the full 72 units of coursework at CGU to earn the PhD may apply for and receive a Master of Arts degree.  All related institutional rules apply.
