Academic Program

For those students who would like to undertake graduate study beyond the MA but not pursue a PhD, the CGU English Department offers the MPhil degree. The MPhil is a terminal degree and does not lead to the PhD degree.  A completed MA degree is a prerequisite for admission to the 68-unit MPhil program.

Degree Requirements

Degree requirements include the following: 64 units of coursework, 4 units of Critique Research, two foreign languages, and an MPhil critique. The critique research is planned in consultation with an English faculty advisor and is designed to inform and underwrite the MPhil critique, a research paper of 12,000-15,000 words (40-60 pages).

All 40 units of coursework from a CGU MA, or a maximum of 24 units transferred from an MA granted by another institution, may be counted toward the MPhil Coursework, distribution requirements, and the language requirement for the MPhil are the same as those for the PhD.
