About Transdisciplinary Studies

Globalization and the complex nature of community and world problems has heightened the need to provide students with an education that enables them to work collaboratively across multiple fields of study and develop the habits of life-long learning. To meet this need, Claremont Graduate University has developed the Transdisciplinary Studies Department.

We consider Transdisciplinarity to be the interaction of three or more disciplines, distributed across two or more schools, that produces results not likely to be obtained by any one discipline alone.

The Transdisciplinary Studies Department and Claremont Graduate University have worked hard to provide members of the CGU community with opportunities to incorporate Transdisciplinarity into their personal research and professional careers through Transdisciplinary Course requirements for Ph.D students; interfield and dual degree programs; Reading/Working Groups; Transdisciplinary Dissertation Awards; Transdisciplinary Research Awards for CGU faculty members; and a variety of on-campus events.

Transdisciplinary Courses

Each semester, the Transdisciplinary Studies Department offers classes that combine scholarship in multiple fields of study. These courses are intended to help students integrate transdisciplinary perspectives into their personal research. Any CGU student may take a Transdisciplinary course at any time.

PLEASE NOTE that all PhD students MUST take one Transdisciplinary course in their first 48 units of coursework.
