Faculty - Arts Management & Art Business
The Peter F. Drucker & Masatoshi Ito Graduate School of Management, in collaboration with Arts & Humanities faculty, offer the Master of Arts in Arts Management and the Executive Master of Arts Management degrees.
The core courses of the Arts Management Program provide a context for managing arts and cultural organizations through an exploration of the following areas.
- The nature of the creative process—how art and the artist function in society
- The economic, political, and social environment for the arts
- The local arenas in which arts organizations exist
- The importance and potential of technology
- The impact of demographic diversity
- The ethical issues confronting arts managers
Upon completion of the program, students are expected to possess foundational knowledge for arts administration in the following areas.
- Understanding of current arts and cultural theory and policy
- The dynamics and logistics of institutional development related to how art gets presented and produced
- Leadership in complex organizational environments, including the dynamics of working with boards, organizational structure and staffing, and working with artists and other constituencies
- Basic business skills in nonprofit accounting, financial management, organizational theory and practice
- Marketing and resource development strategies for the arts
- Strategic analysis and planning
- The application of research methodologies to the field, including the ability to conceptualize, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate data
Students in the Arts Management Program have a passion for the arts. The program attracts students locally, nationally, and globally and students who are early career or arts executives. Students who are early in their careers have the flexibility to enroll full-time or part-time. The program blends coursework in advanced cultural studies with management courses. Cultural institutions in the profit and nonprofit sector seek capable managers with an understanding of the arts and business to head museums, theatre and dance companies, cultural centers, music and arts education organizations, and to advocate for the future of the arts.
The essence and structure of the program promote integrative and interdisciplinary practices that are applicable to the arts. Courses in research technologies and methods, and supervised consulting projects with innovative LA-based arts organizations connect theory with practice.
