Claremont Graduate University is authorized under federal law to accept and enroll international students with nonimmigrant visas. Graduates of colleges or universities outside of the U.S. who have completed the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree may apply for admission to CGU. Requirements for admission include records of academic distinction and an ability to read, write, and speak rapid idiomatic English with a high degree of facility.
International students who enroll at CGU are responsible for adhering to the requirements stated by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). As a part of these requirements, admitted international students must prove their ability to support themselves financially for at least the first year of study by submitting a completed Affidavit of Financial Support form and providing verification of the statements made on the affidavit. These documents are required in order for the University to issue a Certificate of Eligibility (I-20 or DS2019). Admitted international students are encouraged to visit www.cgu.edu/international for information on Obtaining an I-20 (or DS-2019) to CGU.
I-20/DS-2019 Requirements
Upon admission to CGU, international students must submit the following in order to obtain an I-20 (F-1 Students) or DS-2019 (J-1 Student/Scholars).

A $200 deposit or $750 deposit for Management and Financial Engineering program. Deposit information is included in the admission packet and all deposits must be made in U.S. dollars. Deposits may be made online at www.cgu.edu/Admissions. The six-digit student ID number, provided on the deposit card enclosed with the acceptance folder, is required.

An Affidavit of Financial Support, found online at http://www.cgu.edu/intlforms.
Both the Affidavit of Financial Support and financial proof documentation may be scanned and emailed to international@cgu.edu. Faxed documents may be transmitted to (909) 607-7285.
Individuals with a current SEVIS record should request a transfer from the international student coordinator at the institution of attendance. The Transfer Form can be found online at http://www.cgu.edu/intlforms. Transfer I-20/DS-2019 documentation must be completed with 15 days of the first day of classes. Within those 15 days, individuals must have submitted a deposit, the Affidavit of Support, Financial Proof documentation, and must be enrolled in classes. Individuals whose Visas have expired and who plan on traveling outside the U.S. before starting at CGU, must obtain an I-20 from CGU to apply for a new visa at the appropriate U.S. Embassy/Consulate.
Third-Party or Sponsored Students
Students sponsored by an organization or government agency must become familiar with their sponsor’s regulations on payment of tuition and fees. Students who require direct billing of sponsors must contact Student Accounts Office each semester to ensure billing arrangements are made.
Medical Requirements
All admitted international students are required to complete a Graduate Medical History Report. Medical clearance is required of all international students before registration. In addition, all international students are required to show proof of health insurance, or to purchase the Claremont Consortium’s insurance plan, throughout their career at CGU.
The Student Health Service on campus provides health services to all Claremont Colleges students. Student Health Service includes an inexpensive immunization program (including tetanus, measles, mumps, and rubella) and a tuberculin skin test. New students who have not completed the required tests should make arrangements to visit the Student Health Service for immunization soon after their arrival.
Foundations in Graduate Writing & Presenting and Graduate Writing Course
The Foundations in Graduate Writing & Presenting (FGWP) course is designed to cover foundational skills for success in academic work at the graduate level. Further, the course facilitates the international student’s cultural adjustment and transition into the graduate student workload and life in American society.
The Graduate Writing Course (GWC) is designed to prepare student for doctoral level coursework. Focusing on a semester-long research paper or project, the course integrates the development of critical skills for research, information management, writing, and presenting.
Requirements for enrolling in FGWP and GWC are dependent upon the iBT scores of incoming students and the student’s classification as either Master’s or doctoral.
Master’s Students. Incoming Master’s students with iBT scores of 100 or below are required to register in the FGWP course.
Doctoral Students. Doctoral students are provided the following options.
- Incoming doctoral students with iBT scores below 91 must register for FGWP and GWC as a sequence over two semesters.
- Incoming doctoral students with iBT scores between 91 and 100 are required to register in GWC.
International Academic Probation (AP) Policies
CGU’s Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy requires that students maintain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 and have no more than two Incomplete grades at any one time. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for graduation from any CGU program.
Government regulations impose additional International Academic Requirements for student on F and J Visas.
- International students must continuously make “satisfactory academic progress” towards their degree. Students who fail to meet this requirement must have their immigration record terminated by the university.
- Incompletes represent an individual’s voluntary inability or unwillingness to attend class and/or complete assignments. This is inexcusable for international students. The Incomplete must be replaced by a permanent grade no later than the following semester. Incompletes that result in the student exceeding the University’s two Incompletes limit must work to complete the courses no later than the following semester.
- International students must register for and complete a full-time study course load each semester. This means the student must be enrolled in a minimum of 8 units or be enrolled in either Continuous Registration or Doctoral Study. Students who drop below full-time enrollment must be terminated by the school. Incompletes grades count against the full-time requirement. Students who receive an Incomplete grade for any semester in which they are enrolled for only 8 units have dropped below the full time course load requirement and must be terminated.
