Claremont Graduate University is authorized under federal law to accept and enroll international students on non-immigrant visas. Graduates of colleges or universities outside of the U.S. who have completed the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree may apply for admission to CGU.

International students who enroll at CGU are responsible for adhering to the requirements stated by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). International students on a non-immigrant visa, specifically F-1 and J-1, must receive a Certificate of Eligibility (Form I-20 or From DS-2019) to obtain authorization to study at CGU. The I-20 or DS-2019 is generated from a database managed by USCIS called SEVIS, the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System. Admitted international students are encouraged to visit www.cgu.edu/international for information on obtaining an I-20 (or DS-2019) to CGU.

I-20/DS-2019 Requirements

Upon admission to CGU, international students must submit the following in order to obtain an I-20 (F-1 Students) or DS-2019 (J-1 Student/Scholars).

  • A tuition deposit is required depending on program of study. Deposit information is included in the admission packet and all deposits must be made in U.S. dollars.  Deposits may be made online at www.cgu.edu/Admissions. The six-digit student ID number, provided in your admission letter, is required.

  • An Affidavit of Financial Support is found online at http://www.cgu.edu/intlforms. International students must prove their ability to support themselves financially for the first year of study (cost of attendance). The Affidavit of Financial Support will provide the total cost of attendance that a student must provide, and a list of approved forms of financial documentations.

  • Financial proof of the statements made on the Affidavit of Financial Support may include bank documents, letter from a sponsor, etc. The Affidavit of Financial Support will list all approved financial statements.

  • Copy of passport page. If a student would like to add their spouse or children as dependents on their SEVIS record, their passport page(s) should be submitted as well.

  • Individuals with a current SEVIS record should request a transfer from the international student advisor at their current college/university.  The SEVIS Transfer In Form can be found online at http://www.cgu.edu/intlforms.

  • A shipment label purchased through UEMS Eship Global. UEMS Eship Global is a shipping service used by many US universities to ship immigration documents. Students are responsible to pay the shipping fees. Once a shipment label is purchased, the student and CGU will be informed. For more information, please visit UEMS Eship Global’s website.

Both the Affidavit of Financial Support, financial proof documentation, and passport page may be scanned and emailed to international@cgu.edu.

Individuals whose visas have expired and plan on traveling outside the U.S. before starting at CGU, must obtain an I-20 from CGU to apply for a new visa at the appropriate U.S. Embassy/Consulate.

Third-Party or Sponsored Students

Students sponsored by an organization or government agency must become familiar with their sponsor’s regulations on payment of tuition and fees. Students who require direct billing of sponsors must contact Student Accounts Office each semester to ensure billing arrangements are made at student.accounts@cgu.edu or visit the Student Accounts  page in this bulletin.

Insurance and Medical Requirements

F-1 Visa Holders

All international students on F-1 visas, whose SEVIS record is held by CGU are required to pay the International Student Services fee (every fall and spring semester), which includes the IMG Accident and Sickness plan. This coverage is mandatory for all F-1 international students who are registered in coursework, doctoral study or continuous registration.

International students on a medical leave of absence who are enrolled in the plan will continue to remain on the plan for that semester. Students on a leave of absence (non-medical) at the beginning of each term, will not be enrolled in the IMG plan.

To learn more about the IMG plan, as well as view information about coverages, please visit the Health Insurance Community Page on MyCGU at https://mycampus.cgu.edu/web/health-insurance.

J-1 Visa Holders

All international students (in degree seeking programs) on a J-1 visa, whose SEVIS record is held by CGU are required to pay the International Student Services fee (every fall and spring), which includes the IMG Accident and Sickness plan. This coverage is mandatory for all J-1 international students who are registered in coursework, doctoral study or continuous registration.

International students on a medical leave of absence who are enrolled in the plan will continue to remain on the plan for that semester. Students on a leave of absence (non-medical) at the beginning of each term, will not be enrolled in the IMG plan.

Exchange students on a J-1 visa, whose SEVIS record is held by CGU, are not required to join the IMG plan. However, J-1 visa regulations state that all exchange visitors (as well as their accompanying spouses and dependents) should have insurance in effect that covers them for sickness or accidents during the time of their exchange visitor program.  For more information, visit the government’s website. If an exchange student would like to join CGU’s plan, the student must contact healthins@cgu.edu.

To learn more about the IMG plan, as well as view information about coverages, please visit the Health Insurance Community Page on MyCGU at https://mycampus.cgu.edu/web/health-insurance.

Dependents and Other Visa Categories

Students interested in enrolling a dependent should email: healthins@cgu.edu.

All other visa types, or those whose SEVIS record is not held by CGU, are not eligible to participate through the university plan.

Summer Start

All incoming summer-start international students will not be enrolled in the IMG plan until the first fall semester of their academic program. If summer-start students would like coverage for the summer months, they should contact healthins@cgu.edu.

To learn more about the IMG plan, as well as view information about coverages, please visit the Health Insurance Community Page on MyCGU at https://mycampus.cgu.edu/web/health-insurance.

Medical Requirements

The Student Health Service on campus provides health services to all Claremont Colleges students. F-1/J-1 Visa Regulations

Nonimmigrants enrolled at CGU on an F-1 or J-1 student visa are required to maintain legal status as outlined by the Department of Homeland Security (SEVIS regulations 8 CFR 214.2 (f) (https://www.ice.gov/sevis/schools/reg) or SEVIS regulations 8 CFR 214.2(j) (link URL: https://j1visa.state.gov/sponsors/current/regulations-compliance/)). For CGU enrollment policies, see the Academic Policies  section of the Bulletin.

Students who fail to maintain their status are subject to a SEVIS record termination (https://studyinthestates.dhs.gov/sevis-help-hub/student-records/completions-and-terminations/termination-reasons) and accrual of Unlawful Presence (https://www.uscis.gov/legal-resources/unlawful-presence-and-bars-admissibility).

International Academic Probation (AP) Policies

CGU’s Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)  is defined within the academic department.  General policy requires that students maintain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 and have no more than two incomplete grades at any one time.  A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for graduation from any CGU program.

Government regulations impose additional international academic requirements for student on F-1 and J-1 Visas.

  • International students must continuously make “satisfactory academic progress” towards their degree. Students who fail to meet this requirement are subject to dismissal, and termination of their SEVIS record. For more information, please visit the Academic Policies - Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)  section of the bulletin.
  • International students must enroll in a full-time study course load each fall and spring semester by the add/drop deadline.  A full-time study course load is enrollment in a minimum of 8 units; Continuous Registration; or Doctoral Study. Students who drop below full-time enrollment without approval (i.e. Reduced Course Load) from the International Services staff will have their SEVIS record terminated for non-enrollment.
  • International students are not required to enroll in courses during the summer semester.

Past Due Balances

International students whose account is not considered current/paid in full are not eligible to register for courses, receive transcripts (official or unofficial), grades, diplomas, credential recommendations, career services or any immigration/SEVIS related services. This policy includes but is not limited to fees for graduate housing, student health services, campus security, and library fines. For more information, visit the Student Accounts  section in this bulletin.
